Server Migration/Plan Upgrade

Server Migration/Plan Upgrade

Server Migration/Plan Upgrade, the idea is to transfer all the data from existing server to the new server. There are 2 scenarios in the Server migration/Plan Upgrade process, A. Server migration/Plan Upgrade with IP change. B. Server migration/Plan Upgrade without IP change. Outlining the strategy for Server migration/Plan Upgrade with IP change: 1. Reduction of ttl for DNS resource records: The first step is to get the ttl value reduced to 5 minutes (300s) for the DNS resource records, so that the DNS records to new NameServers/IP get propagated in no time. Note: If your DNS is hosted with E2E, we will take care of this as the first step otherwise it is to be taken care by your side. 2. Stop Uploading new code/data to server prior to the start of process: It has to be done as a preliminary step from your side. 3. Cloning of existing server: Migrating the data along with configurations to the new server excluding server core files/modules. Moving user accounts from old server to the new server. Moving MySQL databases along with DB users and their privileges to new server. 6. Testing sites & services: As the migration process completes, you should test out your new system.
  • To test & verify SSH based shell access or SFTP based access through WinScp/Filezilla etc. on the new server.
  • To test & verify DB access through phpmyadmin on the new setup.
  • To test & verify the functionality of sites on the new server through hosts file entry.
Relative links for host file entry are as follows, Mac, Linux, Windows. 9. Change of DNS records: Once all the setup, sites and the services are thoroughly tested, it is the time to update the DNS records and point them to the new IP. Note: Remember to open the hosts file again and remove the lines you added. 10. Increase the ttl back to normal values: If all went well, increase the TTL value. Your new server should now be up and running, accepting requests and handling all of the data that was on your previous server.
